Vienna's skyline is one of Europe's largest and most imposing. Its central city square, known as the Ringstrasse, is home to the neo-renaissance parliament building, the Spanish Riding School and the Imperial Palace.

 

The Austrian capital, surrounded by the Alps, is a veritable treasure trove of historic buildings and sights. The Viennese have a knack for finding a way to keep old and new working in harmony, as evidenced by the many baroque churches in the city centre, or the numerous fountains, statues and parks.

 

A good way to experience this is by taking a city tour. These are free and incredibly informative, covering the best aspects of the city in a fun and interesting manner.

 

Several tour companies will take you on a grand tour of the capital, including stops at some of the city's most famous landmarks like St Stephen's cathedral and the Museum of Fine Arts. The latter features one of the most beautiful museums in Europe, with a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and antiques.

 

Another awe inspiring site is the Museum of Natural History, located in the oldest part of the city. Its impressive collections include fossils and dinosaur bones, as well as the most significant collection of Egyptian art in Europe.

 

A great way to get to know the city is by joining one of the many free walking tours available throughout the week. These usually begin in the main city centre and are conducted by trained guides in a group of three or four.
