The Wiener Kammeroper hosts chamber operas, and the Volksoper, which is devoted to the classic Viennese operetta, is often referred to as the best theater in the German-speaking world.

The city's administrative center is in the Rathaus, which is the seat of the city council and state parliament. The Social Democratic Party of Austria, or SPO, has held the mayor's office since 1919. Its municipal policy has been praised by Socialists throughout Europe.

The Vienna Symphony is housed in the Wiener Konzerthaus , and there are also numerous other concert halls in the city. Many of these are oriented towards tourists, and they feature popular highlights of Viennese music.

The history of the city is exhibited at the Wien Museum. It is one of the few museums in the city that exhibits both art and history. In addition, it provides a reflection on issues of contemporary life. The museum has collections from ancient times to modern culture.
